Camden Town was first set out as a residential district at the end of the 18th century. It was originally part of the manor of Kentish Town and the parish of St Pancras, London. Camden Town was a very important business area due to its proximity to the London canal network and then more so with the development of the rail.
Originally and industrial area Camden Town is now renowned for retail, tourism and entertainment attractions. The area now hosts street markets and music venues which are strongly associated with alternative culture.
