Introduced in the latter part of the 19th century, the Deans Awning showed the world what an awing could be. Although many imitators have come and gone, one hundred and twenty years of development and production has ensured our awning remains at the forefront of design, quality of build and customisability. The original is still leading, here’s why:
Fabric
We use only the finest yarn. A technical acrylic fabric manufactured by solution-dying thread before it is woven ensures colour is locked into the very fibres of the weave. With special treatments then applied to deal with the worst of British weather, the fabric provides unrivalled protection against stains, grease, water and dirt. All without loosing the warmth and character of the original cotton covers we used one hundred years ago.
We have over fifty plain colour options available and many more stripes. Fabric samples are included in our swatch pack which is available to order.
Valance
Valances are an optional feature that can provide a stylish finishing touch. Often used by commercial clients for additional branding placement and by residential clients for extended shade, they are available in a variety of shapes and sizes.
Our standard valance has a 200mm drop and is attached to the awning with an integrated valance rail, colour coded to match the chosen timber or fabric colour. All valance fixings are concealed and valances 250mm high and above are manufactured with a weighted hem for increased tensioning.
Wood
In providing protection when the awning is retracted and distributing tension when the awning is extended, the timber box is essential to both the durability and functionality of the awning.
Being hand-crafted in FSC Meranti hardwood and incorporating a unique pitch design to prevent water ingress, the Deans awning box is unsurpassed in meeting both requirements. And, with the vast selection of hand painted and stain finishes available, can complement perfectly any application or aesthetic.
Metal
All metal components in the Deans Awning are from forged steel and consequently 26% stronger than cast components used by other manufacturers. All brackets are designed and manufactured ‘in-house’ with nothing externally sourced. Our metalwork undergoes a robust powder-coated finish, superior to “wet paint” finishing, for:
- Appearance: Greater colour retention & wide range of RAL colours available
- Durability: Greater resistance to corrosion, weathering, scratching & fading
- Performance: Powdercoating can maintain its finish for 15-20 years
- Environment: Powdercoating is non-hazardous using no solvents/VOC’s
Arm Type
Our awning arms are individually fitted and custom-made to every application. There are two styles of arm available, the ‘pivot arm’ and ‘sliding arm’. The pivot arm option usually requires a higher fixing position to achieve a desired projection. The sliding arm option is suitable when the fixing height for a desired projection is below the minimum requirement for a pivot arm.
Operation
The Deans Awning remains the only retractable awning available with a choice of four operating systems and two as standard. Traditionally the awning was only open and closed by a detachable timber retracting pole connecting to the front ‘pull plate’. Now we offer three additional options, including motorised control, all of which have become increasingly popular solutions.
- Manual Pull: Duo-Lux soft sprung roller operation – with retracting pole
- Manual Crank: Soft wind crank operation – with winding handle
- Motorised: Electro-Smart automated remote control. RTS operated by hand-held or wall-mounted remote switch
- Fixed: Non-retractable components used for permanent extension
