A Challenging Awning Installation at Platapian in London’s Soho District

The Deans Traditional shop blind/awning is a popular choice for London’s many historic commercial locations, not only due to its traditional appearance, but also because of the robust, triangulated fixing allowing for extension in all but the windiest conditions.

The Traditional awning seen here has been installed on the popular Platapian Thai restaurant located on London’s Greek Street, Soho.

A bespoke hardwood awning box, which conceals a steel roller, is mounted securely along its entire width. The hand-profiled, FSC sourced, hardwood timber front lath is, conventionally, supported at each end by right and left-handed powder-coated steel arms. However, in this case, there was no secure location on the right-hand side of the awning to which a fixing bracket could be securely attached!

After some head scratching, our imaginative design team decided that, if a right-hand arm could not be fitted, we would just use two left-handed arms with a second “left-hand” arm. This was then fixed securely onto a hardwood pillar conveniently located a meter from the right-hand end of the awning.
