Over heating in schools reduced with external awnings
The reduction of solar gain and glare are included in the government’s education guidelines
This situation has become critical in recent days with schools and nurseries threatening closure due to overheating. The simple act of providing solar control in the form of a retractable awnings can reduce heat gain within in a controlled fashion.
According to The European Solar-Shading Organisation internal shading an external awning can reduce inside glazed building temperatures by as much as 18% and by 38% if external shading systems (awnings) are incorporated.
In our variable climate the weather can be seen as an obstacle to this outside learning process – but it needn’t be. An un-shaded classroom can reach up to 50DegC with an outside temperature of 27 Deg C but this can be reduced by the simple expedient of installing external shading in the form of an awning. The latest temperatures experienced recently in the UK exceed even these figures.
